“Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a debilitating condition affecting as many as one-half of all patients with diabetes during the course of their disease (1). The progressive, irreversible course of the disease ultimately leads to an increased incidence of ulceration and limb amputations (2).” Diabetes Care 2004 May; 27(5): 1153-1159

The European Association For The Study Of Diabetes - NEURODIAB, the Asociación Latinoamericana De La Diabetes – ALAD, the Instituto Nacional De Diabetes Y Endocriniología – INDEN and NEURODIAB - Society for Diabetic Neuropathy invites you to the 2nd edition of the International Course on Diabetic Neuropathic Foot and its Consequences, which will take place online on the 27th - 28th of April, 2023, between the hours 17:00-20:00 (Central European Time) We are convinced that everyone's participation in this event will make a significant contribution to their professional development and will help them build a good personal and professional brand.

The scientific committee and the organizers of this event, express their heartfelt and recognized gratitude for the effort made by each of the participating Professionals and the institutions for their support so that the 2nd course can be carried out for the benefit of all those patients who suffer from Diabetes Mellitus and the professionals who assist them.

The 2nd edition of the International Advanced Course on Diabetic Neuropathic Foot and its Consequences, will take place on the 27th - 28th of April 2023, between the hours 17:00-20:00 (Central European Time).

The event will be LIVE broadcast and can only be watched by those who registered (they will receive a username and password one day before the event).

In addition, the recording of the event will be available on the platform for 30 days.

During the event, the participants will have the opportunity to interact and exchange experiences and good practices with internationally renowned experts in diabetes and diabetic neuropathy.

All participants will have the opportunity to ask questions real time. We encourage you to be active during the presentations.

The event follows a high-quality scientific program, that includes scientific sessions followed by Q&A sessions, as well as case presentations dedicated to various diabetic pathologies.

Alfred Gatt qualified as a podiatrist in 1986. From 1987 till 1990 he set up and worked at the Diabetes Foot Clinic, which is still being run today at Mater Dei hospital. Since 1990 he was placed in charge of Podology Services within Department of Health, a position he has occupied for 20 years. In 1990 he became Manager Podology Service, responsible for the strategic planning, implementation and administration of all Podiatry services within the DH. Because of an extensive interest in Biomechanics, he started two new clinics while working as Manager: a once-weekly Rheumatoid Podiatric Clinic, at St Luke's Hospital and a twice-weekly Gait Assessment Clinic that included Foot Pressure Mapping for the first time in Malta, at the Podology Department at B'Kara Health Centre. Both clinics are still active to date. In 2003 he obtained a Master's degree from the University of Brighton, with research entitled "The use of orthoses in the management of hindfoot pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis". In 2008 he started a PhD at Staffordshire University, entitled "A Biomechanical Investigation of Ankle Joint Complex Dorsiflexion", which had such a profound effect on him that he changed over from management to becoming a full time academic in September 2010. He was awarded his PhD in July, 2012. In 1999 he was founder President of the Association of Podiatrists of Malta. He is presently chairperson of the Diabetes Foot Research Group, which he has helped to launch in 2011. Special interests include CADCAM orthoses, Foot Pressure Mapping, 3D motion capture, foot modeling and biomechanics of musculoskeletal foot conditions.

She then left the Health Department to set up a private practice in Podiatry until 2009. Prof. Cynthia Formosa was awarded the Masters of Science in Podiatry in April 2003 from the University of Brighton, United Kingdom with research entitled ‘The Relationship between the level of diabetes-related knowledge and the incidence of peripheral neuropathy in patients suffering from chronic type-2 diabetes mellitus in Malta’. She was later awarded the PhD in Podiatry in October 2009 from the same university. Her research was entitled 'Culture and the management of Diabetes in Malta'. Prof. Cynthia Formosa is currently working on full-time basis with the University of Malta as an Associate Professor and former Head of Podiatry Department inside the Faculty of Health Sciences. A post which she had occupied for the past 17 years. She was also President of the Association of Podiatrists, Malta for two years and is currently helping the Association with all the educational activities it organises. She is currently a member of the International Federation of Podiatrists and a member of the Clinical Biomechanics and Human Performance Research Team at the Faculty of Health, Staffordshire University. She is also a founder member of the Diabetes Foot Research Group, University of Malta. Prof. Cynthia Formosa has just completed her first Post-Doctoral research focusing on the Prevalence Rate of Diabetes Foot Risk Factors and Complications in the Maltese Diabetic Complications. Linda has been a very active leader and participant in D-Foot International projects over many years. Currently, she is one of the two Chairs of South America Central America Region of D-Foot. She is a powerful advocate for people with diabetic foot disease and preventing lower limb amputations due to diabetes in Brazil. Dr Pedrosa has been at the forefront of diabetes research, she is an excellent team leader and role model for the establishment of specialist treatment centres for people with diabetes and diabetic-related foot disease not only across Brazil but around the world. In the past year, her role has been made even more difficult by the devastating effects of the Covid pandemic on the Brasilian population. Dr. Prashanth Vas is a highly esteemed consultant diabetologist and diabetes foot physician based in London. He is expert in the management of diabetes and specializes in diabetic foot, Charcot foot, diabetic neuropathy and diabetic nephropathy amongst other areas. He oversees a pioneering multidisciplinary diabetes foot unit, one of the largest in the UK and is particularly renowned for his experience in the management of diabetic foot complications. Dr. Vas completed his initial medical training in India before undertaking extensive post-graduate training at various hospitals across the UK, including the internationally renowned Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. He and fellow collaborators, created the Ipswich Touch Test, a widely recognized method used to assess the loss of protective foot sensation, now adopted by Diabetes UK. Dr. Vas also continues to train and teach professionals at King´s College Hospital. Dr. Vas has previously been an expert advisor to National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and to the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF). He also co-founded The British Diabetic Neuropathy Symposium, the only academic meeting in the UK on this complication of diabetes. Dr. Vas’s research interests include diabetic foot ulcers, diabetic neuropathy (especially small fibre neuropathy) and new techniques to detect neuropathy.
